The visible light spectrum consists of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet light. These colors, when combined, create the white light we see. Each of these rays, however, has different energies and wavelengths. Dr. Joel H. McGahen, your eyeglasses specialist, talks about the blue end of the visible light spectrum and how it can affect your eyes.
Blue Light
There’s an inverse relationship between the wavelength of light rays and the amount of energy they contain. To put this simply, the shorter the wavelength, the more energy the light ray has, and vice versa. Since the blue light has a smaller wavelength, it carries more energy.
Benefits of Blue Light
This type of light is present almost anywhere, from fluorescent light to computer monitors, smartphones and tablet screens. This light, however, is necessary for good health. Studies show that blue light can boost alertness, improve memory and cognitive function and elevate mood. It’s also essential to regulate the circadian rhythm, which refers to the body’s natural wake and sleep cycles. Note, however, that too much exposure to blue light can also disturb your body clock and even affect your eyesight.
Schedule an eye exam with your local eye doctor to determine which eye protection works best for you.
Blue Light and Your Eyes
Most visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens before it reaches the retina. This can age the eyes and even impair vision. For instance, continued exposure to blue light could damage the retinal cells, which can lead to age-related macular degeneration. Digital eyestrain is also something to look out for. This is characterized by sore or irritated eyes or difficulty focusing.
Blue Light Eye Protection
What can you do to protect your eyes from blue light? First, limit your screen time and take frequent breaks to rest your eyes. Your optometrist may also suggest anti-reflective lenses and computer glasses for blue light protection.
